Fettered to my Faith
One of my favorite songs is 'Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing'. It's got a catchy tune of course, but it's also super honest. Honest about how hard it is to cling to faith, and how desperately we need Jesus in our lives. My favorite line is "let Thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee." To be fettered to something means to be chained to, or even handcuffed to someone or something.
Every time I sing this I feel it in my bones! I want those chains wrapped around my heart and held in Christ's stable hands. There are moments in my life that feel like the links to those fetters. Some of them are from my childhood--others from young adulthood, motherhood, and any other hood that makes up my life story. These are what make me and other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints fettered to God and to our faith in Jesus Christ. The links are grounding experiences that make it impossible to deny that this church is the true church of God on the earth.
Some feel that these intimate moments are too sacred to share, too precious to tell. I disagree. I think it's time we share those experiences with each other. Together we can strengthen the links that bind us to our faith. We can find common ground in the whisperings of the Spirit in a world that's constantly shouting. Hearts are wandering and lonely and what is more grounding than common experience? Of course every experience is unique, but the Spirit of God always lifts us up, and I could use some lifting myself.
So let's swap stories. What are your strongest links in your chain to Christ? How did you forge them? Who was there to help you? Join me in speaking up for those sacred, life-changing, earth moving, heart fettering moments that define our faith and our joy!
